Event Description:
In conjunction with "Wakati: Time Shapes African Art" (on view through Jan. 16) AKIRASH will conduct a public performance of two traditional African rituals. Twenty volunteers are invited to perform in each ritual (sign up at museum.okstate.edu). The public is invited to observe each event. "BATETELE/Libation" Part One: Tuesday, Sept. 29, 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm This is a coming-of-age African ritual, usually for young men at 18 years, to recognize their new status as adults. Both men and women are encouraged to participate. This event will occur in the form of a walk across campus as performers decorate AKIRASH in colorful powdered paint. "BATETELE/Libation" Part Two: Tuesday, Sept. 29, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm Libation is an African ritual asking gods, ancestors, and creators for peace, long life, health, success, and prosperity. Food, seeds, and fruit will be presented as a prayer offering. This event will take place outside of the museum.
