Science Fiction fans are invited to join a film and discussion group where they can share their love of the Sci-Fi genre. The Stillwater Public Library is presenting “Tense Futures: a Science Fiction Film Series” which will take place Feb. 4 – May 6. The series is hosted by OSU professor Tim Prchal.
“Tense Futures” is the second series for the Science Fiction Film Club at the library,” said Prchal. “In this series, we’ll be looking at how science fiction films have portrayed the future. They’re almost always bleak futures.
“We’ll be talking about whether these visions of the future are cautionary tales. Are we interested in worst-case scenarios so that we’ll know what to avoid? Or do sunny futures just get in the way of good, gritty drama?”
Each program in the series will include a film viewing followed by group discussion led by Prchal, Visiting Professor of English in OSU’s College of Arts & Science. Prchal teaches popular fiction at OSU and has written a series of speculative-fiction audio dramas called “Marvelous Boxes,” which was produced by Toronto's Decoder Ring Theatre. He is currently finishing a short story collection titled “Help for the Haunted: A Decade of Vera Van Slyke Ghostly Mysteries,” which will be published by Emby Press at the end of this year.
The discussion series includes PG13 and R films and is intended for people 17 and older. Young adults may attend the R rated films if accompanied by a parent.
