Librarians pride themselves on being some of the earliest recyclers. From sharing books and creating story time crafts with paper towel rolls to making mountains of scratch paper from copies, libraries have unknowingly been at the forefront of the efforts to reuse. Sept. 30-Oct. 3, the library continues its role by offering “Going Green,” a series of programs to help community members recycle and reuse.
On Monday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m., Central Rural Electric Cooperative (CREC) will partner with the Library to present the program, “Energy Efficiency in the Home.” Ray Chambers, Commercial Energy Advisor, will share tips and ideas for more efficient usage and identify the steps a home owner can take to help save energy and reduce costs.
After the program, the library will introduce its new service, “What’s Your Watt?,” which includes the checkout of home electric metering devices. Library card holders will be able to borrow the devices which measure the energy use of home appliances. The devices plug in to all electrical appliances, including computers, refrigerators, and hair dryers, then calculate wattage used, associated costs, and C02 emissions.
The library will host Lynn Malley, Solid Waste Management Extension Educator and Sustainable Stillwater member, on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. The program, “Recycling Matters!,” will be geared toward teachers, parents and PTA members in an effort to encourage Stillwater and area schools to be actively involved in recycling.
The program includes videos, demonstrations, games, and conversation. Malley will feature a national program from the Can Manufacturers’ Institute and a discussion about composting food.
Adults and children who are twelve years or older are invited to a craft program on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 4 p.m. The program will include an assortment of projects using glass jars and a variety of techniques. Jars will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own.
Stillwater’s new curbside recycling program will be highlighted on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. Chris Knight, Waste Management Superintendent for the City of Stillwater, will share news, tips, and information about this new program. Healthy snacks for everyone and activities and games for children will be provided.
“Going Green” programs are free and open to the public. Each program will take place at the library.
