Resilient Payne County Seminar 

Guest Speakers will be Barbara Sorrels, EdD and Captain Royce Stephens. Dr Sorrels is a child development specialist, educator and consultant with a heart for “children from hard places.” As the founder of Connected Kids, she provides educators, parents and advocates with compassionate, evidence-based strategies for guiding children through trauma and other challenges. She received her EdD in Early Childhood Education - Oklahoma State University; Master's Degree - Southwestern Seminary; Trained by Dr Bruce Perry and Certified in Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics and Education. Dr Sorrel will be presenting - Strength in the Broken Places: Overcoming Adversity. Captain Stephens began his law enforcement career in 1991 serving in the United States Army and then civilian law enforcement with Oklahoma State University in 1996 and ultimately the Stillwater Police Department in 1999. In his 28 years of law enforcement Captain Stephens has worked in roles as diverse as community policing coordinator, patrol officer, detective and undercover narcotics investigator. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Family Studies and numerous advanced law enforcement certifications. The main focus of his career and training has been in the area of narcotics investigations and enforcement. He currently serves as the Operations Bureau Commander for Stillwater PD where among other units he is responsible for the Uniformed Patrol and Detective Divisions. Captain Stephens will present - The Changing Illegal Drug Scene in Payne County. These two excellent speakers will share information that will help raise awareness of the adversity in our county. And with awareness we can address how to become a county where children and families thrive.
