Name: One Book, One Community: Stillwater Reads Woody Guthrie
Date: February 28, 2013
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM CST
Event Description:

The six week series will focus on the life of Woody Guthrie and his autobiography, “Bound for Glory: the Hard-Driving, Truth-Telling Autobiography of America’s Greatest Poet-Folk Singer.”

“We usually choose Oklahoma related books for the “One Book, One Community” series,” said Lynda Reynolds, library director.  “This year is a perfect time for our community to share Guthrie’s book.  The nation recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of his birth, and the Woody Guthrie archives are being relocated to Oklahoma.”

The “One Book, One Community” kick-off will feature guest speaker Dr. Hugh Foley, Professor of Fine Arts at Rogers State University, author of “Oklahoma Music Guide II” and founding board member of the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.  Foley will discuss the importance of Guthrie’s autobiography and help participants understand the musical and lyrical elements that reveal valuable insights into some of Guthrie’s primary musical influences that became part of the Oklahoma folk singer’s personal ethos.

Copies of “Bound for Glory” will be distributed free of charge to participants who sign up for a book discussion.  A list of discussion dates will be available at http://library.stillwater.org.  Copies have been made available through the generosity of the Stillwater Public Library Trust, Friends of the Stillwater Public Library and the Oklahoma Humanities Council.

“Our sponsors have enabled us to provide books to the community and to schedule an outstanding line up of events for this series,” said Reynolds.  “Though I am eager to meet Guthrie’s granddaughter, Anna Canoni, I am most excited about bringing together our community to celebrate a cherished Oklahoma legend.”

The “One Book, One Community” project will also feature two exhibits at the Oklahoma State University Library. “Another Hot Oklahoma Night: Woody Guthrie and Stillwater’s Red Dirt Music,” with images provided by the Oklahoma History Center, will be on display from Feb. 15 through July 30.
