“One Book, One Community: Stillwater Reads Woody Guthrie” is offering two opportunities to meet Anna Canoni, Woody Guthrie’s granddaughter on March 11 and 12.
Tuesday, March 12, from 3:00-3:30 p.m. in the OSU Library, Anna Canoni and Tiffany Colannino, Woody Guthrie Archivist, will provide a guided tour of the “Woody at 100” exhibit which focuses on the life and legacy of Woody Guthrie. Following Guthrie’s road from Okemah, OK to the 100th anniversary of his birth, this exhibit features hundreds of never-before-seen images, artwork and handwritten lyrics. The exhibit has never been displayed in Oklahoma and will be open March 12 to April 12.
Funding for this exhibit is being made possible from the Center for Oklahoma Studies.
Following the guided tour, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room of the OSU Library, Canoni and Colannino will share the fascinating story of “The Live Wire: Woody Guthrie in Performance 1949.” After its discovery in 2001 and years of painstaking restoration, “The Live Wire,” is the only available commercial recording of Woody Guthrie in performance. With his wife, Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, as emcee and Woody as performer, this performance gives rare insight into the professional and personal relationship between the two. In this presentation, guests will listen to excerpts from the recording and hear the background to its creation. “The Live Wire” received a Grammy Award for Best Historical Album in 2007.
