Event Description:
: ICARE is the motto acronym for the Business Analytics program at Oklahoma State University. Integrity, Curiosity, Accountability, Respect, and Empathy are at the core of everything. When Dr. Miriam McGaugh and her team in Business Analytics were approached to collaborate on research about human trafficking, they jumped at the chance to incorporate ICARE values into a project that could change lives in a dramatic way. Current approaches to human trafficking focus on finding and punishing the trafficker, or removing the trafficked person from the situation. This has not proven to be an effective approach, at least in part because the supply of individual traffickers and vulnerable victims is rapidly replenished. Examining the problem with a public health lens highlights the connections between the ‘host’ (person being trafficked, often a sex worker), the ‘agent’ (trafficker), the ‘environment’ (society and cultural norms), and the ‘vector’ (advertising mechanisms) that makes the enterprise profitable. From this perspective, every connection among these factors offers a potential intervention point. Using big data tools such as network analysis, McGaugh and her team are searching for hidden patterns in online advertising data that can point authorities to entire groups of traffickers and their hosts.
