Event Description:

Oklahoma State University Emeriti Association will host a program on retirement communities on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 1:30 p.m.  The class, part of the “Making the Most of Retirement” series, will feature Toni Wolfe from Stillwater’s Primrose Retirement Community.  The series focuses on topics that confront retirees.

“Seniors often face loss of social networks after retirement,” said Wolfe, Marketing Director for Stillwater Primrose.  “Our belief is that seniors can live healthier if they have social opportunities and activities.  Even something as simple as a meal is enhanced when you are dining with friends.”

Besides the social amenities available, Wolfe will address the other services that a retirement community like Primrose offers.  The community, which is available for people 55 and older, offers both Assisted Living for those who have daily needs and Independent Living for those looking for social opportunities, activities and living that does not require the responsibility of home ownership.

It is the reduced home upkeep that initially attracted one recent Primrose resident, Arlene Smith.

“I had come to the phase in my life when I was worrying too much about fixing the different problems in my home,” said Smith.  “I found that I could not take care of my yard like I wanted, so I decided it was time to allow myself to give up those worries and responsibilities.”

Smith shopped around for several different retirement living arrangements before settling on Primrose.

“Primrose just seemed right for me,” Said Smith.  “I’m a very active, long-term volunteer at the Stillwater Public Library and Primrose will have an excellent library facility where I can assist readers.  I also appreciated that guest rooms would be available when my family visits out of town.”

“The community offers a wide variety of recreational options,” said Wolfe.  “The Movie Theater lets residents enjoy an afternoon matinee or watch an OSU football game. The Pub/Billiard Room, great social gathering place to enjoy a glass of wine with friends or engage in a game of dominoes.  The Wellness Center provides exercise options on stationary equipment or in yoga classes led by a professional yoga teacher.”

Primrose Retirement Community is a privately owned facility.  The company began in the 1980’s due to the owner’s frustration in seeking senior living for his grandparents.  Stillwater's Primrose is the company’s 29th facility.

“Making the Most of Retirement” meets the third Wednesday of each month.  All retirees are invited to attend the free programs, and no registration is required.  Upcoming programs include Factors to Evaluate in Determining Whether to Purchase a Stock by Steve Norman on Dec. 18, Financial Planning for Successful Aging by Louise Schroeder on Jan. 15 and Preparing for the Severe Weather Season by Kirk Mittelstet on Feb. 19.

Retirees interested in learning more about the programs should visit http://retiredinstillwater.wordpress.com or contact the library at 405-372-3633 x106 or askalibrarian@stillwater.org.
