Kids should kick their imaginations into high gear and get ready to build fantastical structures, creatures, and other Lego creations.  Starting Sept. 19, the Stillwater Public Library will start its Lego Club, which will be held the first Monday and the third Thursday of each month from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

The overall goal of the new club is to provide the space and tools needed for children to gain valuable lifelong skills while engaging children in a fun activity.

“Building with Legos is one way to encourage children to think creatively, to problem-solve, and to experience hands-on engineering skills,” said Elizabeth Murray, children’s librarian. “I also like that the nature of group building encourages peer interaction, conversation, and cooperative play.”

Each club session will last an hour.  Participation is free and open to elementary aged children, but is limited to 20.  A different theme will be announced at the start of each session and children will be encouraged to build creatively based on the theme. 

“I am excited to offer Lego Club because block building embodies the philosophy of play-learning, which is always our goal—that kids learn and have fun doing it” said Murray.  “I cannot wait to see what amazing creations the kids come up with!”

According to Murray, the library started asking for Lego donations during the summer reading program and interest in joining the club was immediate. 

The library is still taking donations of either Legos or funds to purchase the pieces.
