(STILLWATER, OKLA. / March 25, 2013) –– A special evening of Oklahoma music will be held at the OSU Student Union Little Theater on Thursday, April 4, beginning at 6 p.m. A performance by the Monica Taylor Trio will be followed by a 7 p.m. showing of the Academy Award winning film, “Bound for Glory.” The program is part of the “One Book, One Community: Stillwater Reads Woody Guthrie” series.
The Monica Taylor Trio, from the heart of Red Dirt country, features Taylor, Don Morris and Gene Williams. Taylor, known as “The Cimarron Songbird,” has performed across the country and on shows like Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” singing self-penned songs and collaborating with other Red Dirt artists like Jimmy LaFave, Bob Childers, Cody Canada and others.
Morris, who has written songs performed by Cross Canadian Ragweed, Stoney Larue, Jason Boland & The Stragglers, has played with artists such as Martin del Ray, Brewer & Shipley, Jana Jae, Dwight Yoakum, The Brandon Jenkins Band, The Red Dirt Rangers, and many of the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival touring artists.
Songwriter Gene Williams, a long standing member of the Red Dirt scene, has played in Austin, TX, with Jimmy LaFave and other great songwriters and has performed with European and international touring bands.
“Gene is an amazing guitarist and plays every note from the heart,” said Taylor. “And Don has a beautiful baritone. His voice is gentle, with the sounds of his native North Carolina mixed with his adopted home of 30 years, Oklahoma. It’s beautiful harmonizing with him.”
The performance will be followed by the film, “Bound for Glory,” which is based on Woody Guthrie’s autobiographical novel by the same name. Released in 1976, the film stars David Carradine as Woody Guthrie and received Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Music-Original Song Score and Best Costume Design. The film will be shown with closed captioning.
The OSU Student Union Activities Board, a major partner for this program, will have concessions available. Parking on most campus lots is free after 5:00 pm; however, there is a fee for the Student Union Parking Garage.
