Event Description:

2018 Farm Bill

The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, commonly called the 2018 Farm Bill, was passed December 20 of last year. USDA is currently drafting program rules/changes for implementation. Compared to previous Farm Bills, the 2018 legislation makes tweaks (instead of major revisions) to familiar programs and provisions, keeping a strong focus on risk management for the farmer. However, many don’t realize that the Farm Bill also covers nutrition education and food programs, energy provisions, and rural development programs. Drs. Hagerman and Shideler from Oklahoma State will provide an overview of the new Farm Bill and how it might impact Stillwater and Payne County in terms of the area’s agricultural production and community programming.

Amy Hagerman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics at Oklahoma State University working on issues related to Agriculture and Food Policy. After working 7 years with the United States Department of Agriculture, Dr. Hagerman was excited to return to her native Oklahoma where her extension and research programs focus on helping Oklahoma producers understand agriculture and food policies, and manage the risks of agriculture.

Dave Shideler is the Community Development Specialist with the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service and Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics at Oklahoma State University, and he serves as the Acting Center Director for the OSU Extension Small Business Development Center.  He helps communities identify appropriate strategies for economic development and engage in relevant and productive community dialogues about current or future issues, like entrepreneurship or workforce development. Additionally, his research focuses on the use of economic models and concepts to build rural economies through entrepreneurship and food systems.

Our monthly luncheon is a business educational program presented by corporate leaders covering topics and issues relevant to business owners.
